Greenway and Cycle route

Le Tour de Manche uses different types of marked lanes from Roscoff to Cherbourg and from Poole to Plymouth: cycle lanes, greenways, cycle trails and other quiet roads. But what exactly are these ? Here are some useful explanations

These are lanes reserved for non-motorised traffic, designated for pedestrians, cyclists, rollerskaters and people of reduced mobility. They have been constructed on canal and riverbank towpaths, former steam-train tracks, sea-front promenades, forest tracks or in city parks.

Greenways are adapted for family walks.

The terrain varies across the routes. At times it might be hard and fast, at others sandy and loose.

This is a scenic cycle route, medium or long in length, signposted and secure, linking up towns and the regions between them.  A Véloroute uses quiet, minor roads and (as much as possible) cycle paths and other greenways.

Unlike greenways, Véloroutes are entirely designed for experienced cyclists because some sections on roads require high levels of vigilance.
