To ride this section is to experience Devon’s huge variety of landscapes: from the urban expanse of Plymouth to the thick forestation of Plymbridge Woods and the stark beauty of Dartmoor. The route is mostly off-road and uses former railway lines, giving cyclists a thrilling ride through tunnels and across dramatic viaducts.

Plymouth / Tavistock

Coming off the ferry, an on-road section takes you through Plymouth and into Plymbridge Woods. A wonderful off-road trail, passing over viaducts and through a tunnel to skirt Dartmoor, takes you to the spectacular 200m long, 24m high Gem Bridge. From the heavily wooded Walkham Valley, a railway path leads through the 350m Grenofen Tunnel to the historic granite town of Tavistock.

Tavistock / Okehampton

A series of tracks and lanes climb out of Tavistock. Note the commanding position of Brentor church atop a former volcano. From Lydford to Okehampton you join the Granite Way, taking a route along the old railway line which runs beside the dramatic tors of Dartmoor.
